Not too long ago, but in a universe parallel to this one, a woman finds herself walking through the canyons of the Mojave desert. It is hot and dry and the colors are warm and comforting. In the sky she can see the trail of something, leaving this universe.
When she looks up at this trail her eyes land on and follow the ridge line of the canyon. This leads her to see something she had not noticed before. It appears to be the opening to a cave. It looked unreachable but she has her mind set on it. While she stands there wondering how she can enter the cave (whose entrance was right on a vertical face of the canyon) a crow comes to her.
The crow asks, "Do you wish to enter the cave?"
"Yes, but I am scared."
The crow replies: "It's okay to be scared and you know what you need to do."
She crawls onto the crow's wing and together they fly up to the entrance of the cave. The crow sets her down at the entrance and she begins to walk into the darkness. She turns back to look at the crow, who had stayed at the entrance of the cave. She asks, "Aren't you coming with me?"
The crow says, "You know you have to walk through alone, I am only here to help."
So she walks - it's DARK - it's a little chilly, but the cold is welcomed. After some time (she's not sure how much) she sees light. She begins to run. She trips a few times, but never falls. She reaches the other end of the cave - it was a tunnel! Though she could not see them within the dark of the cave, the crows were there all along, aiding her in her journey.
She's now in a different part of the desert. It is a valley with a vast expanse of flat land. She sees a swirling column of smoke, the color of ash and iron oxide. She knows she must walk the trail to find the fire. She tends the fire as she knows it was her duty. She makes sure the fire does not get out of control and quietly follows it until it burns out. Then she sits in the ashes. She sits there a few months encouraging the new plants that have started to grow. And waiting for the crow to return.
